On this day in 2012, Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, who died on 26 November, 2011 at the age of 78 in the United Kingdom after a brief illness was buried in a grand style with military accolade.
2. Morocco Became Officially Independent
On this day in 1956, after signing a joint declaration in Paris to replace the forcefully signed Treaty of Fez that was signed in 1912, Morocco officially gained freedom from French rule.
3. Rhodesia Declared Itself A Republic
On this day in 1970, under the administration of Prime Minister Ian Smith, Rhodesia declared itself a republic. This was prompted by the white minority government that continued to recognise Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and their Head of State, and has used “God Save the Queen” as the country’s national anthem.

On this day in 2009, Guinea-Bissau President João Vieira was assassinated by was shot dead by a group of soldiers while fleeing from his private residence. The attack was made upon the claim that, Vieira was involved in the assassination of Tagme Na Waie, his army chief of staff.
