1. Maiduguri Bombings
On this day in 2016, two female suicide bombers, thought to be members of Boko Haram, detonated their bombings and killed 22 people worshiping at the Molai-Umarari mosque on the outskirts of Maiduguri, Nigeria.
2. Harry Thuko’s Associate, Mary Muthoni Nyanjiru And Others Were Killed While Protesting His Arrest
On this day in 1922, following Harry Thuko’s arrest by British authorities on the 14th, his supporters staged a protest against his arrest. Mary Muthoni Nyanjiru and many others were killed by police officers and some British authorities while advancing towards the police station gate during the protest.
3. Hydro-electric Generation Plant Began Operations Near The Zambezi River Waterfalls
On this day in 1938, the hydro-electric generation plant began operations near the Zambezi River waterfalls Mosi-oa-Tunya, creating power for the town of Livingstone, Northern Rhodesia now Zambia and the Victoria Falls Hotel in Southern Rhodesia now Zimbabwe.
4. Ghana Hosted African Cup Of Nations
On this day in 1978, Ghana hosted the 11th edition of African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and went on to win the tournament for the third time after defeating Uganda. They also became the highest title winner at the time.
5. House Of South Africa’s First Democratic President, Nelson Mandela Was Designated A Public Heritage Site
On this day in 1999, the house Of South Africa’s anti-apartheid activist and first democratic president, Nelson Mandela was designated a Public Heritage Site. The house, which is located at 8115 Orlando West in Johannesburg’s black township Soweto was the Mandela family residence when he was an attorney challenging the apartheid system of black racial oppression.
6. Kasumbi Tombs, World Heritage Site In Uganda Was Almost Completely Destroyed In A Fire
On this day in 2010, the only World Heritage Site in Uganda, Kasumbi Tombs was almost completely destroyed in fire. The Kasumbi tombs is the site of the burial grounds for four kabakas (kings of Buganda) and other members of the Baganda royal family.
7. Peshawar Bus Bombing
On this day in 2016, bomb detonated in a bus carrying government employees on Sunehri Masjid Road in Peshawar, Pakistan. 15 people were killed and 30 people were injured in the attack.
8. Atlanta Spa Shootings
On this day in 2021, 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long went on a shooting spree at two spas and a massage parlor in the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia, United States Killing eight people and injuring one other.
9. Fukushima Earthquake
On this day in 2022, an earthquake of 7.4 magnitude struck off the coast of Fukushima, Japan. The natural disaster killed four people and injured 247 others.
