Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, recently expressed support for his teammate, Alejandro Garnacho, following the latter’s use of gorilla emojis in a social media post.
The 19-year-old Garnacho had shared a photo of himself and Onana celebrating the Cameroonian goalkeeper’s remarkable save of an injury-time penalty against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday but had included the emojis in question.
While Garnacho later deleted the post, English media reported that the Football Association (FA) had been made aware of the post and contacted the Argentinian.
Onana, however, was quick to defend his teammate, stating that he did not believe Garnacho should face any repercussions for his actions.
In a post on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Onana argued that “people cannot choose what I should be offended by”, and that he knew exactly what Garnacho had intended by using the gorilla emojis: “power & strength”.
He went on to suggest that the matter should not be taken any further.
At the time of writing, Garnacho had made no comment about his deleted post or about being contacted by the FA.
Meanwhile, Manchester United emerged victorious from their Champions League Group A match against the Danish champions, FC Copenhagen, winning 1-0 thanks to a header from Harry Maguire.
However, the club could have dropped two points if Onana hadn’t saved Jordan Larsson’s penalty several minutes into stoppage time.
