In the past few weeks, Manchester United explored the possibility of hiring other managers but ultimately decided to stick with Erik ten Hag.
On Sunday, Ten Hag addressed the ongoing speculation that had been circulating since the club’s FA Cup victory last month, confirming that the club chose to “go for the best.”
Speaking on a Dutch television sports show, Ten Hag explained the club’s decision-making process.
“As in any organization, an evaluation takes place,”
he said.
“This seems very sensible to me.”
He pointed out that the new leadership, referring to new owner Jim Ratcliffe, was experiencing football management for the first time.
Ten Hag revealed that Ratcliffe’s company, Ineos, had also engaged in discussions with other potential managers, including Thomas Tuchel.
“That’s no secret. Everyone knows they spoke to several candidates,”
he noted.
“In the Netherlands, such discussions are not allowed if there is a current manager. But in England, the rules and laws are different.”

Despite these considerations, Ten Hag stated confidently, “In the end, they concluded that they have the best trainer.” This decision was made while Ten Hag was on holiday in Ibiza.
“The club management came to me while I was on holiday,”
he said.
“They suddenly showed up on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me.”
Reflecting on the discussions, Ten Hag shared,
“We had a good discussion and various topics were covered. One conclusion is that we will extend the contract. However, we still need to reach an agreement.”
Despite their FA Cup win, Manchester United’s eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season was their worst since 1990.
“It was a turbulent season. Never a dull moment,”
Ten Hag remarked.
Ultimately, the club’s decision to retain Ten Hag underscores their belief in his capabilities as they move forward.
