Governor’s Response to Tragedy
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced the cancellation of his upcoming birthday celebration as a tribute to the children who tragically lost their lives in a stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan. This decision was made public during a condolence visit from the South-East delegation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Details of the Incident
The stampede, which occurred in the state capital, resulted in the deaths of 35 children. Governor Makinde labeled the event as “painful, unfortunate, and preventable,” and decided to spend his birthday, which falls on December 25th, in solitude indoors, emphasizing his personal grief over the incident.

Makinde shared his sentiments, noting, “It is a day that is really sobering for me personally. Not only did I cancel the event in Ebonyi, I told everyone that I would stay indoors on my birthday. There is no party; I have sent the message out.” He reflected on the year’s challenges, including an earlier explosion in Bodija, expressing resilience through community support.
