Despite the Christmas excitement that is creeping in as the days go by, agitations heighten amongst Nigerians as food prices skyrocket on a daily basis. This leaves many wondering how the Christmas celebrations would be. According to a market survey across markets in South-West and North-Central, the current prices of food commodities in Nigeria include:
50kg bag of rice between N45,000 – N65,000.
50kg bag of beans between N50,000 – N70,000.
25 liters of palm oil between N25,000 – N30,000.
Carton of 20 pieces of spaghetti between N10,000 – N13,000.
10kg bag of semo between N10,000 – N13,000.
450g tin of milk and milo between N2,500 – N3,000.
A bag of wheat N8,000 – N10,000.
Also, the price of a big loaf of bread ranges from N700 – N3000 depending on varieties. The high cost of cereals also resulted in high cost of meat, fish and egg. A crate of egg sells between N2,500 – N2,800.
The above are the current market prices as opposed to these prices earlier in the year:
50kg bag of beans was sold at N20,000 – N40,000.
50kg of rice was sold at N30,000 – N45,000.
25litres of palm oil was sold at N12,000 – N15,000.
A carton of spaghetti was sold at N7,500 – N8,500.
