Lagos State is making a substantial investment in the educational success of its students.
The government recently announced the disbursement of over N849 million in scholarships and bursaries to 10,066 students enrolled in tertiary institutions across the state.
This initiative underscores Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration’s unwavering commitment to ensuring accessible and high-quality education for all residents.
Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, highlighted the importance of education within the government’s T.H.E.M.E.S plus Agenda.
He commended Lagos-owned institutions for maintaining an uninterrupted academic calendar during nationwide strikes, a feat that exemplifies the government’s dedication to educational progress.
The funding allocation breaks down into N335.6 million designated for scholarships for undergraduate and PhD students, as well as the Governor’s Discretionary Awards.
Bursary awards for undergraduates and law school students totalled N513.9 million.
Looking beyond financial aid, the government is implementing initiatives to cultivate a strong reading culture.
Mr Sule announced the rehabilitation and digitalization of 300 secondary schools and 40 public libraries.
These improvements will equip students with broader access to educational resources and contribute significantly to their academic development.
The commitment to student success extends beyond funding by ensuring the seamless operation of digital libraries.
Dedicated power generators and a monthly stipend of N250,000 have been allocated to each school with a digital library, guaranteeing uninterrupted access to these valuable resources.
In addition, these libraries are well-stocked with a diverse collection of print and digital materials, catering to a wide range of learning styles and interests.
Librarians have also undergone specialized training to effectively assist students in navigating digital resources and fostering a love of reading.
The minimum admission age for Lagos state-owned tertiary institutions remains 16 years old.
