The Lagos State Government has dismissed claims of banning sachet water or planning such an action, according to the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab. This clarification follows a viral video showing individuals destroying sachet water packs in factories and public spaces, leading to widespread speculation.
The Truth Behind the Viral Video
Wahab clarified in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) that:
- The individuals in the video are not Lagos State enforcement officers.
- They are operatives of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), targeting sachet water products that fail to meet NAFDAC standards.
- The enforcement exercise is part of efforts to safeguard public health and safety.
Lagos State’s Position on Sachet Water
Wahab reiterated that Lagos State has not banned sachet water nor plans to do so. Instead, the government remains focused on sustainable plastic waste management.
Key initiatives include:
Mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR):
- Producers of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), sachets, and carrier bags of no less than 40 microns are required to participate.
Plastic Waste Management Fund:
- To be financed by contributions from producers and major importers.
- Jointly managed with Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs) to address plastic waste challenges.
Sustainable Measures in Place
The state government is actively working to mitigate environmental issues caused by plastic waste. In January 2024, it banned Styrofoam and other single-use plastics, citing their non-biodegradability and their role in clogging drainage systems despite regular cleaning efforts.
Government’s Call to Action
The Ministry encourages public collaboration in achieving sustainable waste management goals. Wahab emphasized:
“Our focus remains on effective plastic waste management, not banning sachet water. We are fostering dialogue and partnerships to balance environmental sustainability with economic interests.”
