The Labour Party has announced a significant shift in its approach to selecting its presidential candidate for future elections. According to the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, the presidential ticket is no longer exclusively reserved for Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate. Instead, it is now open to all party members who wish to vie for the position.
Julius Abure made this revelation during a recent press briefing, emphasizing that the decision aligns with the party’s commitment to internal democracy and transparency. He stated that any qualified member of the Labour Party who meets the requirements and has the ambition to run for president is free to contest for the ticket in the party’s primary elections.
This announcement marks a departure from the perception that Peter Obi, who was the Labour Party’s flag bearer in the 2023 presidential election, would automatically retain the ticket for future elections. Abure highlighted that the party aims to provide a level playing field for all members and encourage active participation in the democratic process.
