Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah has passed away at the age of 86.
The announcement was made by Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah al-Sabah, the minister of his emiri court.
No cause of death was provided. Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber, the deputy ruler and half-brother, is expected to take over, though there has been no official announcement.
Sheikh Nawaf assumed the position in September 2020 after the death of his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah.
His legacy is noted for his long service, including as defence minister during the 1990 Iraqi invasion, and a reputation for modesty.
