The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) in Kebbi have commenced a strike in protest of unpaid salary arrears. This action follows a directive from their national bodies. The strike, which began on Tuesday, resulted in the closure of the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi (FUBK). Malam Aliyu Turaki, SSANU’s state chairman, announced the protest to the media, emphasizing their grievance over the federal government’s failure to pay the outstanding salaries. He stated that the unions would evaluate the strike’s impact the following week and plan a national protest in Abuja on July 18 if the issue remains unresolved.

Professor Muhammad Zaiyanu-Umar, the Vice-Chancellor of FUBK, acknowledged the peaceful nature of the protest and confirmed that the strike was in accordance with national directives rather than state council decisions. He expressed sympathy for the union members’ hardships due to the unpaid arrears and praised the cooperative relationship between the university’s management and the unions, encouraging its continuation.
