Real Madrid’s dynamic winger, Vinicius Junior, was awarded the FIFA Best Men’s Player at the awards ceremony held in Doha on Tuesday. This accolade follows closely on the heels of his second-place finish in the Ballon d’Or, where Real Madrid had previously chosen not to attend upon hearing of Rodri’s win.
Vinicius, present in Qatar for Real Madrid’s upcoming Intercontinental Cup final against Pachuca, accepted his award with heartfelt gratitude. Reflecting on his journey, he said, “I grew up in a world of poverty, of organized crime. It’s for all the children who grow up in that world.” His speech was a tribute to his supporters, including his family, club, teammates, coach Carlo Ancelotti, his first club Flamengo, and Brazil, acknowledging their role in his success.
A Season of Glory and Goals
Last season, Vinicius was instrumental in securing both La Liga and the Champions League for Real Madrid, with 24 goals and 11 assists in 39 matches. His decisive goal in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund underscored his importance to the team. Despite sharing the limelight with Jude Bellingham in the league, Vinicius shone brightest in European games, leading Madrid with six goals, including crucial strikes in the semi-finals and the final.

However, not all was triumph for Vinicius, as he faced setbacks with Brazil at the Copa America, where the team was eliminated by Uruguay in the quarter-finals despite his contributions.

Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati was named the Best Women’s Player for the second year in a row, adding to her impressive collection which includes two Ballon d’Or awards. From Barcelona’s Olympic Stadium, she expressed her pride and gratitude for the award, which recognizes her leadership in guiding Barcelona to a historic quadruple, encompassing the Spanish league, Copa de la Reina, Supercopa de Espana, and a consecutive Women’s Champions League title.

The ceremony also honored Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho with the Puskas Award for his stunning bicycle kick against Everton in the Premier League, recognized as the year’s best goal.
