A devastating accident on the Ekwegbe road along the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka route has resulted in the loss of at least 16 lives. An 18-seater commercial bus crashed and burst into flames, leaving 14 males and 2 females dead.
Two survivors are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. Preliminary investigations indicate that the bus, traveling at high speed, lost control and collided with the fence of Maduka University.
The Enugu State Police Command, led by Commissioner Kanayo Uzuegbu, along with officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), are on-site to assess the situation.
“However, the actual point of take-off and final destination of the vehicle have not been ascertained. Nonetheless, the items have been recovered by the Igbo-Etiti Police Division.
“The Commissioner of Police described the accident and the carnage therein as sad, while commiserating with the yet-to-be-traced family members, friends, and associates of the deceased.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the victims’ identities to come forward and assist in contacting their families.
