President Bola Tinubu has directed the free distribution of 2.1 million bags of fertilizer to farmers across Nigeria. This move is part of the government’s efforts to boost agricultural productivity, ensure food security, and support farmers affected by rising costs of farm inputs.
The distribution, which will be coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, aims to reach smallholder farmers in rural communities across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The initiative is expected to provide much-needed relief to farmers struggling with high prices of fertilizers and other essential inputs.
In a statement issued by the presidency, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of supporting the agricultural sector as a critical component of Nigeria’s economic growth and development. “Our farmers are the backbone of our nation’s economy. By providing them with free fertilizers, we are taking a step to empower them to increase crop yield, enhance food production, and stabilize food prices,” the statement read.
The government’s decision comes amid concerns over rising food inflation and the challenges faced by farmers in accessing affordable fertilizers. The initiative is also expected to mitigate the impact of recent economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, which have increased production costs for farmers.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development noted that the distribution will be conducted in phases to ensure equitable access and prevent diversion. “We have put in place measures to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution process. Our goal is to ensure that these fertilizers reach the farmers who need them most,” the Minister said.

Local farmers and agricultural associations have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that it will improve agricultural output and reduce the cost of farming. This initiative is seen as part of President Tinubu’s broader agenda to revitalize Nigeria’s agricultural sector, promote self-sufficiency in food production, and reduce reliance on food imports. The distribution is expected to commence immediately, with state governments and local government councils playing key roles in coordinating the process at the grassroots level.
