The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has resumed orientation activities in Zamfara State, reopening its camp after a 16-month hiatus caused by security concerns.
The reopening ceremony took place on Friday at a temporary camp in Gusau and featured the swearing-in of Batch C Stream 1 corps members deployed to the state.
Renovation and Rebuilding Efforts
The permanent orientation camp in Tsafe, Tsafe Local Government Area, remains under renovation by the state government. During the closure, many prospective corps members posted to Zamfara were redirected to Kebbi and other states for their orientation programs.
Improved Security Sparks Confidence
Muhammad Lawan Ahmed, the NYSC Coordinator for Zamfara State, expressed optimism about the improved security situation, allowing the return of orientation activities.
“This ceremony is significant and historic, marking the resumption of orientation in Zamfara more than a year after its closure,” he said.
A total of 400 corps members—320 males and 80 females—were sworn in to commence their orientation. Ahmed urged the corps members to embrace discipline, tolerance, and the essence of national unity while actively participating in the camp’s skills acquisition programs.
Governor and Security Assurance
Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Youth Development, encouraged corps members to act as ambassadors of unity and service.
“We will ensure your security and welfare. Zamfara offers a wealth of opportunities for growth and learning, and we are committed to maximizing the benefits of the NYSC program,” Lawal said.

Reiterating the state’s commitment, Police Commissioner Mohammed Dalijan assured the corps members of their safety, stating, “The presence of security agencies here is proof of our readiness to protect you. Zamfara is now safe, and you will be posted only to secure areas.”
Excitement Among Corps Members
Corps members expressed enthusiasm about their deployment to Zamfara, highlighting their readiness to embrace the culture and contribute to the state’s development.
“I was excited when I saw my posting to Zamfara. I’ve never been to the North before, and I see this as an opportunity to explore and try new things,” said Amah Victoria, a corps member from Lagos.
The reopening of the orientation camp signifies a positive step toward restoring normalcy in Zamfara and fostering unity through the NYSC program.
