The Nigerian Army has announced the burial date for 17 soldiers who were slain by gunmen during a peacekeeping mission in Delta State.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Army stated that the soldiers who lost their lives in the Okuama community of Delta State will be laid to rest on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.
The funeral will be held at the National Cemetery in Abuja at 3 pm.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to attend as the Special Guest of Honour at the ceremony.
Previously, the President denounced the killings, stating that the assailants, whom he labeled as “cowardly,” must face justice.
He described the killing as “unprovoked” and “dreadful.”
“As the Commander-in-Chief, I stand with all well-meaning Nigerians and our armed forces in mourning and expressing deep sorrow for the unnecessary loss of our brave soldiers,” Tinubu stated.

“My deepest sympathies go out to the families of these fallen soldiers, their comrades, and their loved ones. The military high command is addressing this incident. The perpetrators of this atrocious act will face justice.”
Furthermore, during the Ramadan fast-breaking last Wednesday in Abuja with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, and the House leadership, Tinubu vowed to posthumously award the deceased soldiers with national honors.
“Further announcements will be made shortly. They will receive a fitting burial and national honors.”
