In a developing situation, doctors in Lagos State have issued a stern warning of a potential showdown with the government over unpaid allowances.
The medical professionals, who play a crucial role in the healthcare system of Nigeria’s most populous city, are demanding immediate resolution of their grievances.
The threat comes amid growing frustration among doctors who have not received their allowances for several months.
The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) expressed their concerns during a press briefing, highlighting the critical nature of their demands and the potential implications for the healthcare sector if not addressed promptly.
Dr. Adetunji Adeniran, Chairman of the Lagos State NMA, outlined the doctors’ position. “We have reached a breaking point. Our members have been working tirelessly, especially during the recent healthcare challenges, yet their allowances remain unpaid. This is unacceptable, and we demand immediate action from the state government,” Dr. Adeniran stated.
The unpaid allowances cover various categories, including hazard allowances, call duty allowances, and other entitlements essential to the welfare and motivation of medical staff.
The NMA emphasized that despite repeated appeals and negotiations, the government has failed to honor its commitments, leaving the doctors with no choice but to consider more drastic measures.
“We have exhausted all peaceful avenues to resolve this issue. If our allowances are not paid within the stipulated timeframe, we will be forced to take industrial action. This is not a decision we take lightly, but our welfare and the quality of healthcare we provide are at stake,” Dr. Adeniran added.
The potential strike has sparked concerns among patients and healthcare advocates, who fear the significant impact on medical services in Lagos. The state’s hospitals and clinics, already under pressure from the high patient load and limited resources, could face severe disruptions if the doctors proceed with their threatened action.
In response to the doctors’ ultimatum, the Lagos State Ministry of Health has issued a statement acknowledging the outstanding payments and assuring that efforts are underway to resolve the issue. “We understand the concerns of our healthcare workers and are committed to addressing their grievances.
