A massive fire outbreak at a spare parts market in the Idumota area of Lagos State on Friday night has destroyed property worth hundreds of millions of naira.
In a statement on Saturday, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the incident, noting that multiple buildings used as car spare parts shops were razed.
Response and Containment Efforts
Emergency teams from LASEMA, alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service, worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjoining structures. Law enforcement officers were also deployed to manage the crowd and ensure safety at the scene.
“The immediate or remote causes of the fire incident are yet to be ascertained,” Oke-Osanyintolu said. “Dampening down has commenced to extinguish the remaining pockets of fire, and recovery operations are ongoing.”
No Casualties Reported
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported. Salvage operations are underway to recover valuable properties from the shops that were spared.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with authorities emphasizing the need for strict safety measures in marketplaces to avoid future occurrences.
