In a bid to ease transportation challenges and promote cleaner energy usage, the Federal Government has announced the commencement of free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) bus rides in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The initiative, which is part of the government’s efforts to cushion the effects of subsidy removal and foster sustainable transportation, will run from now until January 6, 2025.
The free bus services will operate across five key routes in the city, providing relief for commuters and reducing the financial strain on transportation costs. The designated routes are:
- Eagle Square
- Berger
- Area 1
- Maraba
- Zuba
The buses, powered by cleaner and more cost-efficient CNG technology, reflect the government’s commitment to transitioning towards environmentally friendly alternatives while addressing immediate public transportation needs.
During the launch of the initiative, the Minister of Transportation, Said Ahmed Alkali, highlighted the significance of this pilot project in promoting sustainable urban mobility. “This initiative demonstrates our resolve to provide accessible, affordable, and eco-friendly transport solutions for Nigerians while supporting the transition to cleaner energy,” he stated.

Commuters have been urged to take advantage of the service and cooperate with transport operators to ensure smooth and orderly operations. The Federal Government plans to extend similar initiatives to other parts of the country after evaluating the success of the Abuja project.
