Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has been arrested in Lagos by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges of currency mutilation and naira note abuse.
Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesperson, confirmed in a telephone conversation with Channels Television on Thursday that the cross-dresser was apprehended Wednesday night.
“Bobrisky was arrested last night in Lagos,” the EFCC official stated to our correspondent.
He is currently detained at the EFCC’s Lagos office and is expected to be charged in court.
Bobrisky has recently made headlines for various controversial reasons, including receiving the “Best Dressed Female” award at a movie premiere on March 25, 2024, which caused discontent among many entertainers.
Despite the public outcry, Force Spokesman Muyiwa Adejobi clarified that there is no legal provision that mandates the arrest of crossdressers in Nigeria.
“I have not found any information suggesting that cross-dressing is an offense in Nigeria,” he stated during the Politics Today program on Channels Television on April 2, 2024. “We must be reasonable; you cannot arrest someone you intend to prosecute without credible evidence. Therefore, cross-dressing is not currently a crime in Nigeria.
“Some individuals who cross-dress are alleged to be involved in other activities; that is where the issue arises. We require sufficient proof that they are engaged in ‘that.’ All such offenses are considered unnatural in Nigeria and are punishable under our laws,” Adejobi emphasized.
