A Federal High Court in Abuja has decided to grant temporary bail to DCP Abba Kyari, former commander of the IGP Intelligence Response Team (IGP-IRT), after his prolonged 27-month detention in Kuje prison.
The ruling, delivered by trial Justice Emeka Nwite on Tuesday, sanctioned Kyari’s release for a two-week period to enable him to partake in his late mother’s funeral rites.
Specifically, the court granted Kyari temporary freedom, not exceeding two weeks, allowing him to participate in the burial proceedings.
The bail was set at 50 million Naira, with a surety required in the same amount. The designated surety, who is also Kyari’s counsel in the case, must deposit a copy of their call-to-bar certificate with the court’s deputy registrar.
As part of the bail conditions, Kyari is mandated to surrender his travel passport to the court and regularly report to the nearest National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) formation during the bail period.
This decision by the trial judge is pending the ruling on Kyari’s full bail application scheduled for May 31, 2024.
The court’s decision comes after the recent passing of Kyari’s mother, Yachilla Kyari, on May 5, 2024, though it remains unclear if this influenced the bail grant.
Kyari’s legal saga began with his indictment by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 2021, linking him to alleged international Internet fraudster Ramon Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi.
Subsequently, Kyari was arrested by the NDLEA in February 2020 on charges related to drug offenses, leading to his detention at Kuje prison in Abuja.
