1. Potchefstroom High School For Boys Opened In South Africa
On this day in 1905, Potchefstroom High School for boys opened in Potchefstroom in the North West region of South Africa. The school is located on a notorious concentration camp for boys. The school is one of the oldest schools in South Africa.
2. The Anglo-Ethiopian Agreement Took Place
On this day in 1942, the Anglo-Ethiopian Treaty took place. The treaty was signed by the British to regain Ethiopia’s independence after the Italian troops were driven out by a joint British and Ethiopian army in 1941 during the Second World War. The agreement took place after the return of Emperor Haile Selassie to the throne.
3. The Election Of The Constitution Of The Republic Of Ghana Was Held
On this day in 1964, Ghana’s constitutional election was held. The president of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah reformed this system to make the country work in a one-party and presidential republic.
Although Nkrumah was successful and achieved his goals, he was later ousted in the February 1966 coup.
4. Angola Hosted The African Cup Of Nations
On this day in 2010, the 26th Aftican Cup of Nations (AFCON) was hosted by Angola. 2010 AFCON was to have 16 participants, however a terrorist attack on the Togo team en route a game in Cabinda region, reduced it to 15 participants. Egypt will win the AFCON trophy after two consecutive times to become the first three consecutive title winners.
5. Alaska Airline Crash
On this day in 2000, Alaska Airline Flight 261, a commercial airliner crashed into the Pacific Ocean after losing pitch control. The crash killed all 88 people on board.
6. Molo Oil Spillage, Kenya
On this day in 2009, an oil spill in Molo, Kenya led to a fire. A truck carrying fuel spilled its contents, while a crowd of people approached it to get free fuel. The following fire destroyed more than 50 people. This tragedy happened a few days after a fire broke out at a Nakumatt supermarket in Nairobi which killed no fewer than 25 people.
7. Blue Moon and Total Lunar Eclipse have occurred
On this day in 2018, a large “blue moon” and a total lunar eclipse occurred. A blue moon is said to occur when there are two full moons in the same calendar month, or if there are 4 full moons at the same time.
