1. Yaba Higher College Was Formally Opened
On this day in 1934, Nigeria’s first institution of higher learning, Yaba higher college in Yaba, Lagos was formally opened for higher students in Nigeria. The college provided vocational trainings in medicine, agriculture, forestry, veterinary medicine, engineering, as well as science teacher’s trainings.The college was affiliated with the University of London.
2. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Was Appointed Military Governor Of Eastern Region
On this day in 1966, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the Biafran agitator became the military governor of Eastern region of Nigeria after being appointed by the then Military Head of State, Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi.
3. Sudan Joined The Arab League
On this day in 1956, Sudan joined the Arab league two weeks after their independence from Egypt and the United kingdom. The Arab league also include other countries in North and East Africa.
4. Gambia President-Elect Was Sworn-in In Senegal
On this day in 2017, Gambia President-Elect, Adama Barrow after winning the presidential election was sworn-in in The Gambia embassy in Dakar, Senegal.
Following, Barrow’s victory at the poll, the long time dictator leader of the country, Yahya Jammeh refused to handover power to Barrow despite his victory. Jammeh further sought to extend his tenure instead. This futther deepened the already existing political crises in the country.
Barrow undeterred by Jammeh’s refusal and sought refuge in neighboring Senegal and went ahead with the inauguration and swearing in ceremony. After several interventions, he took a second oath of office in The Gambia on February 18, 2017.
5. Uganda Opened It’s Tallest Building
On this day in 2019, Uganda’s tallest building, the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) tower was officially commissioned by the Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni.
The building, a 22-storey skyscraper was constructed to serve as the URA headquarters and to house all subsidiary offices of the organization.
6. Bannu Bombing In Pakistan
On this day in 2012, the Bannu bombing attack by the Talibans left twenty six Pakistani soldiers dead and thirty eight other people injured.
