Giorgio Chiellini, the former Italy and Juventus defender, announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday at the age of 39.
The football veteran revealed that he had played his last match on Saturday in Los Angeles FC’s MLS Cup final defeat to Columbus Crew, ending his illustrious, trophy-packed career.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Chiellini expressed his gratitude and love for the sport, saying,
“You have been the most beautiful and intense journey of my life. You have been my everything.”
He went on to reminisce about his experiences and accomplishments, adding, “With you, I have travelled a unique and unforgettable path. But now it is time to start new chapters, face new challenges, and write further important and exciting pages of life.”
Chiellini’s career spanned over two decades, during which he won nine Serie A titles with Juventus and captained Italy to their Euro 2020 triumph at Wembley, where they defeated England on penalties in the final.
He began his career at Livorno before moving to Juventus in 2005, where he played for 17 years, establishing himself as one of the world’s best defenders.

Known for his strong defensive skills and leadership qualities, Chiellini played a crucial role in Juventus’ success, winning numerous Serie A titles and reaching the UEFA Champions League final.
The Italian giants paid tribute to him on their website, saying, “You were always by our side, like a superhero ready to intervene if necessary.”
The club also praised Chiellini’s unwavering determination and resilience, saying, “Once you wore that [bandage], there was no escape for our opponents: it was Kryptonite for any Superman who tried to challenge us.”
Chiellini’s iconic headband became a symbol of his toughness and tenacity on the field, earning him the nickname “King Kong.”
Even in his final season at MLS, Chiellini demonstrated his exceptional skills and dedication to the sport.
