Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emphasized that illegal mining is connected to terrorism financing, warning that those who think otherwise are “surely mistaken.” He made this statement at the African Counter Terrorism summit in Abuja, hosted by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
Tinubu Calls for Regional Efforts and International Collaboration
President Tinubu stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to combat terrorism, addressing root causes like poverty, marginalization, and social injustice. He also emphasized the importance of attacking the financial sources of terrorism, including illegal mining, which generates billions of dollars to fund weapons and mayhem.
International Community Urged to Support Anti-Terrorism Efforts
Tinubu called on the international community to support Africa’s fight against terrorism, as it is largely fueled by external funding. He advocated for a fully operational regional counter-terrorism center to enhance intelligence sharing, operational coordination, and capacity building.
Nigeria’s Commitment to Combating Terrorism
President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to fighting terrorism and violent extremism, highlighting efforts such as the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act and the National Terrorism Centre (NCTC). He also praised the bravery and sacrifice of Nigeria’s security forces in combating terrorism.
Regional and International Cooperation
The counter-terrorism summit was attended by dignitaries from across Africa and the United Nations, including the President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbe, and the Undersecretary of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, Vladimir Voronkov. The event emphasized the need for collective regional efforts and international collaboration to combat terrorism.
