The Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun had disbanded the Tactical Team attached to the Edo State Police Command over a viral video where members of the team ran a vehicle over a citizen in Ekpoma recently.
A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the disbandment was a bold move to address the unprofessional conduct of some police officers who were responsible for running over a citizen at Ekpoma.
Adejobi said the step aims to regularize and standardize police operations in the axis; and restore public trust in the Police Force.
“Additionally, the operatives involved are currently facing disciplinary charges and administrative procedures,” the statement added.
The Police Spokesman said the charges underscores the commitment of the IGP to hold officers accountable for their actions which will never be tolerated in the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Inspector-General of Police reiterates his commitment to ensuring the highest standards of professionalism and ethics, while urging members of the public to always cooperate with Police Officers in the discharge of their statutory duties,” he added.
The social media was recently awash when the handcuffed victim, in a bid to prevail on the team laid on the floor in front of the vehicle with hope that it would deter his arrest by the team.
The erring officers instead ran over the Toyota Sienna bus on the victim which sparked reactions across the nation querying the misconduct and professionalism of the affected officers.
