The Presidency has stated that Godwin Emefiele, the immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, would have faced a firing squad if he was from China.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to president Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, stated this on Friday while reacting to the report of the Special Investigation on CBN and Related Entities, Chargeable offences by Jim Obaze.
CRUX NEWS reports that the Jim Obaze’s report had indicted Emefiele of misappropriating funds while he was CBN governor during former president Muhammadu Buhari administration.
The report revealed that Emefiele opened bank accounts without the approval of the apex bank’s Board of Directors and Investment Committee.
According to the report, Emefiele illegally lodged billions of naira in 593 bank accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, and China.
Obaze disclosed that Emefiele deposited 543, 482,213 in fixed deposits in UK banks alone without authorisation
However, reacting to this in a post on his official X, Onanuga wrote: “If Godwin Emefiele and his gang had committed these egregious misappropriations in China, they will by now be facing the firing squad for high treason.”
