Stanley Nwabali, the talented goalkeeper for the Super Eagles participating in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 tournament, has come forward to address rumours suggesting that he is now Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Speaking to reporters in the bustling city of Abidjan on Tuesday, the skilled goalkeeper, who currently plays for Chippa United FC located in South Africa, stated that he is grateful for the opportunity to represent his country, but he still doesn’t see himself as the team’s go-to goalkeeper.
Nwabali expressed his excitement at being able to play whenever he is given the chance, saying that he always gives his best.
He also added that he is not under any pressure while in goal for the Super Eagles, and he is proud of his performance so far in the competition.
He has managed to keep two clean sheets in the three games played so far, which is no small feat.
The dedicated goalkeeper’s passion for the sport and commitment to his team is evident in his words when he urged Nigerian football fans to remain patient and calm.
He assured them that goals would soon start coming and expressed his confidence in the team’s ability to deliver.
Nwabali emphasized that with someone like Victor Osimhen on the team, they weren’t worried about goals, but rather securing three points.
Nigeria’s victory over Guinea Bissau, with a score of 1-0 on Monday, was a great feeling for Nwabali and the team.
This victory qualified them for the next round of the competition, and they finished second on the log behind group leaders, Equatorial Guinea, with seven points from available nine.
Although Equatorial Guinea also had seven points from three matches, they had a better goal difference than the Nigerian national team.
