Hungary striker Barnabas Varga is set to undergo surgery after fracturing multiple bones in his face during a collision in Hungary’s 1-0 victory over Scotland at Euro 2024.
Varga was stretchered off and taken to the hospital following a horrific mid-air clash with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn, who was attempting to collect a cross in the second half of the match in Stuttgart on Sunday.
Hungary’s players immediately signaled for medical assistance, with captain Dominik Szobozslai helping to bring on the stretcher as teammates gathered around Varga. Medics treated the injured striker on the pitch, with teammates holding up sheets for privacy before he was carried off.

The Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) in the early hours of Monday that Varga had sustained fractures to multiple facial bones and suffered a concussion.
They indicated that he would likely need surgery and would spend the night in a local hospital.
Despite the injury, Hungary secured a dramatic win with Kevin Csoboth scoring the decisive goal in the 10th minute of stoppage time, keeping Hungary’s hopes of reaching the last 16 alive. However, Varga, 29, will not play any further part in the tournament, even if Hungary progresses as one of the four best third-placed teams.
“It was terrible. It was a terrible moment to see Barnabas like that,” said Roland Sallai, who assisted Hungary’s last-gasp winner. “We cross our fingers that he can return quickly. We wanted to win for him, and we dedicate the win to him.”
