The House of Representatives has tasked its Committee on Power with investigating the recurring national grid collapses, directing them to submit a report within three weeks. This action follows a motion of urgent national importance introduced by Hon. Mansur Manu Soro (Bauchi, PDP) during a recent plenary session.
Hon. Soro expressed serious concern over the ongoing grid failures, which have left the country in a state of blackout and exacerbated the existing economic challenges facing Nigerians. He emphasized the critical role of stable power supply in fostering economic growth and development.

In his motion, Soro highlighted that the national grid has collapsed eight times in 2024, labeling the situation as alarming. He pointed out that regions in the Northwest and Northeast have been significantly affected by the power crisis, urging the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to take action to restore electricity to these areas.
Additionally, Soro criticized the Minister of Power for assuring the public of improved electricity supply while the grid collapses continue, noting that this led to the government’s approval of increased electricity tariffs for Band A customers.
