The sudden death of Helen Smart, a former Olympic swimmer who represented Great Britain in the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, has left many in mourning.
The news was first announced by an administrator at the school where she worked, who shared the heartbreaking update on social media.
Helen, who was 43 years old at the time of her passing, was known for her accomplishments in the water, having competed in the 50-meter backstroke and 200-meter backstroke events in Australia.
She was a British backstroke champion and won the bronze medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, among other titles.
After retiring from swimming, Helen went into education, eventually becoming a principal at Worsley Mesnes Community Primary School in England.
Following the announcement of her death, her husband Craig Smart received an outpouring of support from the community.
Despite his grief, he shared a heartfelt response to those who had reached out.
“She loved the school, staff, children, and parents so much,” he said. “She was so proud to reach her goal of being Head Teacher.

She used to say to me all the time she could never see herself at another school. She was Worsley Mesnes through and through!
He went on to offer some wise words of advice, reminding others to live their best lives and make cherished memories, just as Helen had done.
“I remember only last week she said her goal was to get the school to outstanding and that she had the right staff to achieve this,” he said.
“Please learn from this and live your best life, no regrets, take lots of photos, make memories, and keep smiling just like Helen always did.”
The loss of Helen is felt deeply by all who knew her, both inside and outside of the swimming world.
She will be remembered for her impressive career in the water, as well as for her dedication to education and her students.
