On Sunday, the 16th Headies Awards was held at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, USA, amid a grand celebration of African culture and music.
Hosted by Nollywood actress, Osas Ighodaro, and American media personality, Terrence J,
the event saw a spectacular showcase of electrifying performances by renowned artists such as Odumodublvck, Young Jonn, Wande Coal, Kcee, Black Sherif, and Asake among others.
The night was filled with excitement and anticipation as Rema bagged three awards, including Best Male Artiste of the Year, Digital Artiste of the Year, and African Artiste Of The Year.
Asake, on the other hand, walked home with a brand new car after winning the highly coveted Next Rated category.
Similarly, Odumodublvck won a house in Lagos after being named the Rookie of the Year.
In the Best Music Video of the Year category, Director K emerged the winner amidst all the back and forth on social media between Blaqbonez and TG Omori.
Blaqbonez, who won the award for the Best Rap Album of the Year for ‘The Young Preacher’ insisted that “TG Omori and I are still the best directors” while receiving his award.
Other notable winners of the night included SeyiVibes, who was also on the honours list, Burna Boy’s Last Last, which won Afrobeats Single of the Year and Song of the Year, and Rema’s most popular single, Calm Down, which won several awards.
Despite the organisers not presenting some of the categories, including Best Recording of The Year, Songwriter of The Year, Best RnB Single, Best Vocal Performance (Female), Headies Viewers’ Choice, Best East African Artiste of the Year, and Best North African Artiste of The Year, the Headies Awards have become the biggest prize in Nigerian music since their inception in 2006.
Sunday’s event marked the second time the awards ceremony was held in Atlanta, and it undoubtedly showcased the best of African music, artistry, and culture.
