The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has recently called on the Federal Government to implement measures that would help cushion the effects of economic hardship in the country. The union has suggested that the government should create food production zones in each of the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.
Mr Olusegun Abatan, the Southwest Public Relations Officer of NUP, made this appeal during a news conference in Abeokuta on Thursday, following the union’s zonal meeting. He stated that there was a need for the government to declare a state of emergency on food security.
Abatan also stressed the need for massive importation of agricultural machinery, equipment, and agrochemicals. He further highlighted the importance of reviving agricultural extension services in the country to ensure that farmers receive the necessary support and guidance to improve their yield and income.
Additionally, the South-West NUP spokesperson urged the government to open up rural roads for agriculture and set in motion a culture of road maintenance to ensure that these roads remain accessible even during the rainy season.
Abatan also appealed to President Bola Tinubu not to scrap the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD), stating that the agency had been instrumental in ensuring seamless payment of pensions and gratuities. He pointed out that the PTAD had eliminated long queues of pensioners and even death during verification exercises.
In conclusion, Abatan urged the Federal Government to redeem its pledge and be more proactive in tackling the increasing economic hardship faced by Nigerians. The NUP believes that these measures if implemented, would greatly benefit the nation and its people.
