The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has confirmed a cyberattack on its official website, leading to its temporary inaccessibility.
NBS Announces Website Hack on Social Media
On Wednesday night, the NBS took to X to announce that their website had been compromised. The bureau emphasized its efforts to restore the site, where it typically shares vital statistical data on Nigeria’s economy and social sectors.
Caution Against Misinformation
The statement explicitly advised the public to disregard any information or reports posted on the site until it is back online. “This is to inform the public that the NBS Website has been hacked and we are working to recover it. Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you,” the post read.
Recovery Efforts Underway
Despite ongoing efforts, by Thursday morning, attempts to access www.nigerianstat.gov.ng were futile, with the error message “the site can’t be reached” displayed, indicating that the site was still down or under maintenance due to the cyber incident.
