Mass Pardon for 53 Convicts
Osun State’s Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has granted a pardon to Segun Olowookere and his accomplice, Sunday Morakinyo, who were previously sentenced to death for armed robbery. This decision was announced through a statement on X, marking a significant gesture of mercy by the governor.
Clarification on the Conviction
Despite widespread social media rumors suggesting that Olowookere and Morakinyo were sentenced for merely stealing a fowl, the Osun State Judiciary clarified that their convictions were for armed robbery, which included the robbery of a poultry in 2010.
Wider Clemency Actions
Governor Adeleke’s clemency extends beyond just Olowookere and Morakinyo. In total, 53 inmates have been pardoned following recommendations from the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy. The governor articulated his actions by stating, “I am pleased to extend my grace and mercy unto 53 convicts serving various convictions within the Nigerian Correctional Service,” exercising powers granted by the Nigerian Constitution.

Details of the Pardons
- For those convicted of simple offences, Governor Adeleke remitted and forgave the remainder of sentences for 30 inmates.
- Twelve inmates convicted of similar minor offences were granted outright pardons.
- Six inmates on death row had their sentences commuted to outright release, while one, Ojekunle Timothy, saw his sentence reduced to 15 years after serving over a decade in custody.
- Specifically, four convicts, including Olowookere and Morakinyo, had their death sentences changed to outright pardons.
Background of the Case
The crimes for which Olowookere and Morakinyo were convicted took place in 2010, involving the burglary of homes belonging to a police officer and another individual. Their conviction in 2014 by Justice Falola of the Osun State High Court resulted in death sentences after they were found guilty of breaking into these homes and stealing property.
