Rory McIlroy has admitted that he was worried about Europe’s chances in the match against the United States earlier this year.
However, as the tournament draws closer, he has become more optimistic about their prospects.
McIlroy also praised Europe’s rookie, 23-year-old Ludvig Aberg, whom he described as an “unbelievable player”.
Aberg, who turned professional in June this year, was chosen as one of the six wildcards by Europe’s captain, Luke Donald, following his victory at the European Masters in Switzerland and a fourth-place finish at the Czech Masters.
McIlroy added that some people had been sceptical about Aberg’s selection, but his recent performances had silenced the critics.
He also complimented Aberg’s swing, saying it was one of his favourites in the world.
McIlroy acknowledged that this year’s tournament was a “transitional time for Europe” given that players such as Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood were not eligible for selection after joining LIV Golf.
As a result, there were many rookies on the team. McIlroy, however, believed that this was a good thing because it brought a fresh, youthful exuberance to the team.
He mentioned that players like Ludvig, Nicolai Hojgaard and Bob MacIntyre would inject new energy into the team, which was a positive development.

McIlroy was optimistic about Europe’s chances, stating that there was a good mix of experience and youth in the team, and he felt that they were in a good position heading to Rome.
