The Group of Seven (G7) major democracies wrapped up talks in Capri, Italy, vowing to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses and urging China to reconsider its support for Russia’s military.
Focus on Ukraine and the Middle East
The three-day meeting focused on the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the simmering tensions between Israel and Iran. G7 foreign ministers acknowledged the need to increase support for Ukraine, facing a stronger Russian military presence. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba emphasized the interconnectedness of the conflicts, highlighting Iran’s drone supply to both Russia and Israel’s adversaries.
Strengthening Ukraine’s Defense
In a statement, the G7 pledged to enhance security assistance for Kyiv, particularly focusing on bolstering its air defense capabilities. This aims to protect Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure from devastating Russian airstrikes.
China’s Role and European Concerns
The G7 expressed concern about China’s growing alliance with Russia. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken pointed out China’s role as a “primary contributor” to Russia’s military industry, despite its desire for good relations with the West. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock echoed this sentiment, stating that closer China-Russia ties are unacceptable.
Military Aid and Funding Challenges
The flow of military aid to Ukraine has slowed recently. European partners face ammunition shortages, while vital US funding is stalled due to opposition in Congress. However, a vote on a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine might occur this weekend in the US House of Representatives. Discussions are ongoing regarding the use of frozen Russian assets (around $300 billion) to support Ukraine. Legal hurdles are being examined concerning the use of both the interest and the principal amount of these assets. A final decision is expected at the G7 leaders’ summit in June.
De-escalation in the Middle East
The G7 meeting concluded shortly after a suspected Israeli attack on Iran, retaliating for Iranian drone and missile strikes. The ministers urged de-escalation between Israel and Iran, aiming to prevent a wider regional conflict while seeking an end to the war in Gaza.
Keeping Protests at Bay
Italy hosted the meeting on the secluded island of Capri to avoid disruptions from pro-Palestinian demonstrations. However, protests erupted in Naples, with calls for Palestinian freedom and an end to the “genocide” in Gaza.
