Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State has dismissed King Sergeant Awuse of Emohua Kingdom from his position as Chairman of the State’s Council of Traditional Rulers.
He has appointed Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, the King of Apara Kingdom in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, to take his place. This area is also the home of former Governor Nyesom Wike.
King Awuse, a well-known politician and ally of Wike, had been serving as the chairman since last year. Despite his short tenure as a traditional ruler, he was appointed to the council’s top position by Wike.
Governor Fubara announced the change at a meeting with traditional rulers at the Government House, citing “inactivity and lack of effective leadership” under King Awuse. He pointed out that the council, under Awuse’s leadership, failed to include photographs of the Governor and Deputy Governor in its 2024 calendar, which he viewed as a deliberate insult.
Fubara stated, “The council has been very inactive because the chairman has decided not to be responsible as a chairman. I feel that the leadership has not lived up to expectations.” He emphasized the need for leadership that will promote harmony and cooperation with the state government.
Fubara highlighted the importance of traditional rulers in maintaining peace and supporting the government’s efforts. He expressed confidence that Eze Wodo, with his mature character and integrity, would be more competent in uniting the council and fostering cooperation among its members.

In his acceptance speech, Eze Wodo expressed his gratitude and commitment to working with the council and the state government to ensure peace and development in Rivers State. He pledged to devote his time and energy to his new role and to foster unity within the council.
Governor Fubara also assured the traditional rulers that their needs, including official vehicles and allowances, would be addressed promptly. He urged the new chairman to update the records of all traditional rulers and submit them to his office soon.
Fubara appealed to all traditional rulers to support the new chairman and work together to create a united and peaceful Rivers State. He emphasized that political affiliations should not interfere with their responsibilities towards the state and government.
