The Federal Government has directed the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention to release food items from the national reserve immediately.
The step is aimed at addressing the rising food prices attributed to the hardship by citizens nationwide.
Despite assurances that there is no food shortage, the government alleged that saboteurs are taking advantage of the Naira’s depreciation to inflate food prices.
The Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, reacting to a protest by residents in Minna on Monday, accused a cartel of causing price hikes by hoarding food items.
In response, the Information and National Orientation Minister, Mohammed Idris, announced that food items will be released from the National Food Reserves to stabilize prices.
Additionally, the government will engage major millers and commodity traders to ensure food availability. Idris emphasizes that discussions are ongoing, and the government is committed to relieving Nigerians affected by food scarcity.
Idris further disclosed that other actions will be determined in follow-up meetings with the government prioritizing efforts to alleviate hardship nationwide.
