The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed an agreement with three Chinese firms to supply 1.4 million electricity meters across the country. This move aims to address the ongoing metering gap and ensure more accurate billing for electricity consumers.
The agreement, which was finalized recently, is part of the government’s efforts to improve electricity distribution and reduce estimated billing practices, commonly known as “crazy billing.” The procurement of these meters is expected to support the national metering plan, which seeks to provide electricity meters to Nigerian households and businesses.
The three Chinese firms involved in the deal are set to begin the supply and installation of the meters in phases. The initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to enhancing transparency, reducing energy theft, and improving revenue collection in the power sector.

The Minister of Power, during the signing ceremony, emphasized that this agreement is crucial for achieving the government’s target of metering every household in Nigeria. This agreement is part of the ongoing reforms in the power sector, which includes partnerships with international firms and agencies to enhance electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across Nigeria.
