The Federal Ministry of Education has announced the postponement of the inauguration and retreat for pro-chancellors, chairmen, and members of governing councils of federal tertiary institutions.
This decision follows a directive from the federal government, prompted by a State House Press Release issued on May 23, 2024, urging a comprehensive review of the nominees’ membership.
Originally scheduled for Thursday, May 30, and Friday, May 31, 2024, the inauguration and retreat have been deferred until further notice. The ministry, in a statement signed by the Director (Press & PR), Folasade Boriowo, expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the postponement.
The Federal Ministry of Education had recently released the names of nominees for chairmen, pro-chancellors, and council members of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. However, public reactions prompted a review, with concerns raised about the nominations not reflecting the federal character of the country.
In response, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced President Tinubu’s commitment to a thorough review of the list to ensure compliance with the principle of federal character as enshrined in the constitution. This review will also aim to ensure adequate representation from every part of the country.
Meanwhile, the Bauchi zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) criticized the appointment of the nominees, suggesting that reinstating the earlier dissolved members would be preferable under the Bola Tinubu-led administration.
