The Federal Government and the Labour Union have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to implement a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for civil servants. According to a statement from the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, the new wage will take effect from July 29, 2024.
The agreement was reached at the end of a committee meeting held in Abuja, with both the government and trade union representatives agreeing on consequential salary adjustments.
The committee, led by Didi Walson-Jack, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, considered the economic situation in the country before finalizing the decision. Additionally, it was recommended that the wage award previously discontinued by the Federal Government be paid until July 28, 2024.

Walson-Jack, who chaired the committee, praised the peaceful and efficient nature of the negotiations, describing them as the shortest and most amicable thus far. Copies of the signed MOU were handed to both sides, and the agreement will now be forwarded to the Federal Government for further action.
In his remarks, Comrade Benjamin Anthony, the National Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, expressed his satisfaction with the process and commended the efforts of the committee.
