In a recent statement, the Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed plans to adjust telecom tariffs, though not to the extent proposed by telecom operators.
Stakeholder Meeting in Abuja
During a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, outlined the government’s position on the matter. He emphasized the complexities involved in ensuring the telecom sector remains both sustainable and beneficial to national development.
Modest Tariff Adjustments Expected
Tijani clarified that while telecom companies have been pushing for a 100% increase in tariffs due to rising operational costs and global inflation, the government intends to implement a more moderate adjustment. “We’ve looked at various aspects to ensure that telecom companies can continue to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development,” Tijani stated.
Focus on Sustainability and Local Content
The minister highlighted several strategic initiatives, including the protection of telecom infrastructure and boosting local content. He stressed the importance of maintaining the viability of telecom companies amidst global economic challenges, to prevent any decline in service quality or company operations that could hinder economic growth.
Government’s Stance on Tariff Hikes
In his closing remarks, Tijani noted, “You have seen over the past weeks that there has been agitation from some of these companies to increase tariffs, requesting a 100% tariff increase. This is not something that as a government we will be able to subscribe to at the minute.” This statement underscores the government’s cautious approach to tariff adjustments, balancing between economic sustainability for telecom companies and affordability for consumers.
