1. Volkswagen Nigeria Limited Was Founded
On this day in 1973, following a contract signing between Nigeria government and well-known German brand Volkswagen in 1972, Volkswagen of Nigeria Ltd. was founded in Ojo, Lagos. The Lagos company was created as an assembly factory in the nation.
2. Bomb Explosion In An Army Barracks In Kaduna, Nigeria
On this day in 2007, in an alleged attack by the Islamist group, Boko Haram, explosion rocked an army barracks, a bridge and air base in Kaduna, Nigeria.
According to the military, the attack on the barracks was carried out by a suicide bomber wearing an army uniform. Troops opened fire on the bomber and his car as he was sighted trying to barge into the barracks, and the blast
went off.
3. The Natives (Urban Areas) Law Was Enacted In South Africa
On this day in 1923, the Natives (Urban Areas) law was enacted in South Africa. The law was a race segregation where blacks and coloured were chased out of urban areas and into the rural areas. The law also encouraged white supremacy in the country.
4. First Ogaden War Took Place
On this day in 1964, the Ogaden war, also known as Ethio-Somali war took place. The war was a military conflict between Ethiopia and Somali over the Ethiopian region, Ogaden.
Despite several interventions by the Organization of Africa Unity (OAU), hostilities escalated. Mediation by Sudanese President Ibrahim Abboud, eventually led to cessation of war between both countries on April 2nd, 1964.
5. The Mastermind Of The 1993 World Trade Center Bombing, Ramzi Yousef Was Arrested In Pakistan
On this day in 1995, Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind of the 1993 world trade center bombing was arrested in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Yousef born Abdul Basit Mahmoud Abdul Karim was involved in various bombings including, bombing of Philippine Airlines Flight 434.
He was extradited to the United States and convicted with a sentence of 240 years.
6.Uttarakhand Flood In India
On this day in 2021, the Uttarakhand flood, also known as the Chamoli disaster began in Nanda Devi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site environs in the outer Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand state, India. The flood was caused by a large rock and ice avalanche consisting of material dislodged from Ronti peak. No fewer than 200 people were killed or missing in the disaster.
