1. The Kitchener School Of Medicine Opened In Sudan
On this day in 1924, the Kitchener School of Medicine, the first medical school in Sudan named in memory of Herbert Kitchener, the Governor-General of Sudan from 1898 to 1900 was opened in Khartoum, Sudan.
2. Cairo–Haifa Train Bombings
On this day in 1948, a Zionist militant group called Lehi mined the train north of Rehovot, killing 28 British soldiers and wounding 35.
Four cars of the express train from Cairo, Egypt to Haifa, in British Palestine, in a deliberate and calculated attack were derailed when bombs on the cars detonated after the rest of the train carrying civilians has passed.
3. Agadir Earthquake, Morocco
On this day in 1960, an earthquake, 5.8 in magnitude struck Agadir city of Morocco, killing over 12,000 people, injured 12,000 and displaced over 35,000 others. It was regarded as the most destructive earthquake in Morocco’s history.
4. Ethiopia Hosted The African Cup Of Nations
On this day in 1976, the tenth African Cup of Nations was hosted by Ethiopia and the opening match was played. Morocco went on to win the title.
5. Bosnian Independence Referendum
On this day in 1992, the independence referendum began in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This followed the first free elections of 1990 and the rise of ethnic tensions that eventually led to the breakup of Yugoslavia.
According to reports, independence was strongly favored by Bosniak and Bosnian Croat voters while Bosnian Serbs boycotted the referendum or were prevented from participating by Bosnian Serb authorities.
6. Suicide Bombing In Iraq
On this day in 2016, at a Shi’ite Muslim funeral in Iraq’s eastern province of Diyala, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive, killing at least 30 people and wounding at least 58 others.
7. United States – Taliba Deal
On this day in 2020, the United States – Taliban deal, also known as Doha Agreement was made. The deal was a peace agreement signed by the United States and the Taliban on 29 February 2020 in Doha, Qatar, to bring an end to the 2001–2021 war in Afghanistan.
