1. Modernist African Hall Was Completed In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
On this day in 1961, the modernist African Hall located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia was completed after 18 months of construction. It was in this hall, that the Organization of African Unity was formed.
2. Angolan Rebel Leader Jonas Savimbi Was Killed By Soldiers
On this day in 2002, Angolan rebel leader, Jonas Savimbi was killed by Angola government troops. Savimbi was an Angolan revolutionary, politician, and rebel military leader who founded and led the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and till his death confronted the ruling People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) during the Angolan Civil War.
3. A Major Earthquake Struck In Mozambique
On this day in 2006, a large earthquake of 7.0 magnitude struck near Machaze in Manica Province of southern Mozambique, just north of the Save River, killing 4 people and injuring 36.
4. Namibia Began Exporting Beef To The U.S
On this day in 2020, Namibia became the first African country to export beef to the United States. Namibia began by exporting 25 tonnes of beef to Philadelphia in the United States, following almost two decades of negotiations with the US government.
5. Christchurch Earthquake, New Zealand
On this day in 2011, a major earthquake of 6.2 magnitude struck the Canterbury region in the South Island, New Zealand killing 185 people.
6. Buenos Aires Rail Disaster
On this day in 2012, a deadly train disaster occurred at the Once Station in the Balvanera neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. 51 people were killed, while more than 700 were injured in the disaster.
7. United States Embassy Was Attacked In Podgorica
On this day in 2018, the United States embassy in Podgorica, capital of Montenegro was attacked by Serbian Dalibor Jauković, who was the lone victim in the attack. The attack occurred around midnight when the embassy was closed, and nobody was wounded except the attacker who blew himself with the explosive used for the attack.
