Sean Russell Dawkins, a renowned NFL wide receiver who made his mark with the Seattle Seahawks, has passed away.
He passed away at the age of 52, and the cause of his death is currently unknown.
The news of his passing was confirmed by university officials, who spoke to the San Francisco Chronicle on Wednesday.
Dawkins was a first-round pick in 1993 and had an impressive career in the NFL, scoring a total of 25 touchdowns.
He set a personal record of seven touchdowns in one season while playing with the Seattle Seahawks in 1999.
Despite his success as a professional athlete, Dawkins was also a standout player during his college years at the University of California, Berkeley.
In 1992, he was named a consensus All-American and was later inducted into the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.
Following his retirement from football, Dawkins pursued a career in real estate and also trained to become a police officer.
His dedication to his community was well-known, and his passing has been mourned by many, including Colts owner Jim Irsay, who paid tribute to Dawkins on Thursday.
“Rest in peace, Sean Dawkins. I am shocked and saddened,” Irsay said in a statement.
