Italy secured a dramatic come-from-behind victory against Albania in their opening match of Euro 2024. Despite conceding the fastest goal in Euros history after just 23 seconds through Nedim Bajrami, the Azzurri fought back to win 2-1.
Albania stunned the reigning champions with a blistering start. Capitalizing on a defensive error by Federico Dimarco, Bajrami fired home from a tight angle to rewrite the record books. However, Italy displayed composure and quickly drew level in the 11th minute. Alessandro Bastoni rose highest to head home a Lorenzo Pellegrini corner.
The momentum shifted decisively in Italy’s favour five minutes later. Nicolo Barella, returning from injury, unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box to put the Azzurri ahead.

Italy continued to dominate possession with their young players impressing. Central defender Riccardo Calafiori, making just his third appearance, looked assured alongside his more experienced teammates.
Despite their advantage, Italy failed to convert their dominance into more goals. Davide Frattesi nearly extended the lead but his chipped effort was tipped onto the post by Albanian goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha. Donnarumma was forced into a crucial save late in the game to preserve Italy’s victory.
This unconvincing win gives Italy three points but raises questions about their attacking prowess. A tougher test awaits on Thursday when they face Spain, who thrashed Croatia 3-0 earlier on Saturday. Albania, meanwhile, will look to bounce back against Croatia on Wednesday.
