It was an incredible Semi-Finals match between Australia’s Matildas and England’s Lionesses, held in the magnificent Stadium Australia.
And it’s a momentous occasion for England, as they make it to the Women’s World Cup final for the very first time!
Ella Toone gave the Lionesses a lead in the 36th minute of the first half with a powerful strike inside the penalty box.
But the Matildas refused to be left behind and leveled the score in the second half, thanks to a stunning goal by Kerr in the 63rd minute.
However, Lauren Hemp put England back on top when she restored their lead in the 71st minute.
And Alessia Russo sealed the deal, ensuring that England emerged victorious.
Lucy Bronze was at the forefront of the English team, who had suffered disappointment in the semi-finals of the World Cup on two previous occasions. “I can’t believe it,” she said in an interview with the BBC, “this is the one thing I’ve always wanted – to make it to the final.”
When asked about the post-match huddle on the pitch, Bronze revealed that Wiegman praised the team’s resilience and determination, and expressed her satisfaction with how they played the game. “I couldn’t hear much else that she was saying, to be honest!” Bronze added with a chuckle.
It’s going to be a face-off between England on Spain for the finals on Sunday, 20th August 2023, while Sweden battles out third place with Australia on Saturday, 19th August 2023.
