The trial of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele hit a snag on Friday, prompting an adjournment as his legal team requested more time to review additional evidence presented by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Presiding Judge Justice Rahman Oshodi granted the adjournment after acknowledging the validity of the defense’s reasons.
The trial, set to resume on May 9th, will focus on cross-examining John Ayoh, a former Director of Information Technology at the CBN and the second prosecution witness.

Emefiele faces a 26-count charge alongside co-defendant Henry Omoile, accused by the EFCC of involvement in a $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion fraud, to which they pleaded not guilty during their arraignment on April 8.
The trial commenced on April 12, featuring testimony from the first prosecution witness, CBN staff member Monday Osazuwa, detailing instances where Emefiele allegedly directed him to collect large sums of cash.
The second prosecution witness, John Ayoh, began his testimony on April 29, with further proceedings scheduled for May 9.
During the recent session, Emefiele’s counsel objected to the introduction of additional evidence, emphasizing the need for adequate preparation. The defense argued against “trial by ambush,” urging the court to ensure fairness and provide ample time for review.
While the prosecution opposed the adjournment, stressing the importance of expeditious proceedings, Justice Oshodi ultimately granted the request, setting the next hearing for May 9, 2024.
